This has to be an all time favorite photo of mine. Members from our church gave a big group of us tickets to a METS game. It was so fun for Noa to go to her first ever baseball game. And it was pretty cool that her friend, Liam let her borrow his hat for the picture.
These are some of our good friends from our time in New York.
This is Ashley and Linsey, who spent the summer taking care of all the missionary kids. Hudson Taylor is sitting next to Noa having his breakfast at the same time.
And of course there needs to be more photos of Lucy. We miss her so much already!
This is our ministry team. Isaac and Melanie became like family to us as we worked and played and worshiped together all month long! Isaac will be joining us in Chiba, Japan and Melanie will be leaving for Thailand at the end of this month!
Here are Sean and Lindsey and Lucy McCann who became such dear friends this month. I don’t know what we would have done without our sleepovers, pizza dinners, and bath times (just for the little girls). Their friendship was such a blessing and we can’t wait to see the ways that the Lord will continue to cross our paths. For now, they are headed to Honduras.
This is Chloe and Caroline who LOVED Lucy and Noa. And Noa and Lucy LOVED them. Talk about entertainment. Chloe was overheard on the subway one day, while riding with both of them, “TWO BABIES! What could be better than TWO BABIES?”
And this is Noa with Magali, another one of the interns who watched our kids all summer. She is such a beautiful person and so much fun to talk to. She was an MK in Canada and Senegal and now lives with her family in Georgia.
These are some photos of Flushing, the part of New York where we had our ministry assignment. Notice all the Chinese and Korean characters… I guess it should help prepare us for Japan.
We loved our church, Living Faith Community Church and we had the special opportunity to teach ESL classes to people in the Flushing Area.
This is our Chinese student, Fwai Fong Ho. She has lived here for 10 years but just started learning English. She was such a faithful student and we are praying that her classes in some way will point her to Jesus.
This is Marisol, our Columbian student. We found out that she works for a church in Columbia. We loved getting to know her and enjoying her encouragement and smiles.

And here is all of us on our last day. After this, we went out to breakfast together so that they could practice some of the English words for food that they had learned.
One treat while being in New York was getting to see my roomy from college and best friend, Margot. Margot is a New England Nanny and lives about an hour out of the city. We sometimes met in Manhattan to go to Redeemer Church together on Sunday evenings. On this particular Thursday, Margot brought the kids she watches and we
met them for a few hours at the Bronx Zoo.
Here’s the Polar Bear, taking a nap ’cause it was way too hot for him (and us!)
Here is Noa and I in front of the Zebra pasture (you can’t see the Zebras though… oops!)
Here is Margot and Noa and Alex and Ty with the Giraffes behind them.
Those Giraffes were pretty cool.
And here is the king of animals, Aslan Himself. Noa has a lion called Judah that she sleeps with so she wasn’t scared at all of this big guy. He was really cool.
If you even have a chance, I definitely recommend a trip to the Bronx Zoo. It was great fun with so many cool creatures to see.
Just wanted to give you all an idea of where we lived in Queens during the month of July. Please notice our freaky little roomy at the bottom
We’ve been so thankful for the ministry opportunities that God has given us while here in New York. Not only does the program require us to do projects like interviews and ethnographic observations (which are great opportunities meet people and get to know them) but they have also set us up with a great church where we can serve and learn a little bit about what an intercultural church is like. Living Faith Community Church is primarily Asian-Americans and it has been truly a joy to worship with these brothers and sisters. There are so many things about this church that point to its health and strength in the Gospel. Our ministry with them has been to start up an ESL program in Flushing, the part of town where they are located. It has been interesting because so far, we have only had one students, a dear Chinese lady in her 60′s who wants to learn English so badly (after living here 10 years!!) and can’t believe 3 young people would come everyday to teach just her. We have loved getting to know her and pray that the Lord would use this to draw her to Himself. We were very excited this week, though, because we got another student who is from Columbia. She is so eager to learn and thankful that we will take the time to teach her. We will tell you more about this later, but for now, here are photos of Noa with Uncle Isaac and “Great-Uncle” Bruce. The third photo is of Melanie and Isaac with our new student, Marisol. Below are photos from worship at Living Faith on Sunday.
Yes, that is Noa. And yes, she is sleeping in a suitcase. Let me explain: One thing that has been a little bit of a challenge for us has been living pretty far away from the other people who are here with us. But we have really appreciated other families who have opened their apartments to us and let us kinda camp out in their places. The only trouble has been finding a place to let Noa fall asleep where she won’t bother anyone or roll off a bed. This last Saturday, Eric’s birthday, we wanted to stay at Sean and Lindsey’s later so that we could play games. We just couldn’t decide where to put Noa so she could sleep. Enter: McCanns’ Suitecase. Lindsey and I were able to make it nice and cozy and Noa probably thought she was in her own pack and play. What can I say, the Lord provides – even in strange ways – places for us to lay our heads.
