On my walk to school today, I listened to Piper share a 6-minute thought about this question -

What can parents do to keep from having favorites to among their children?

i (eric) am realizing how self-centered i am. when i say ‘i love you,’ i often mean ‘i love what you do for me’ or ‘i love when you serve me/help me/make me feel good.’

last week, ken’s sermon really hit home the fact that God’s word preaches a different kind of love. a self-sacrificing love, not a self-serving love. when God says He loves me, He shows me by sending His Son to die. i love you = i will give up what is most precious to me for you, so that you may call me ‘Abba,’ Father.

when i say ‘i love you,’ i want to mean it. i want to back my words with a heart that puts you first. i want the meaning of the words i say to be seen in actions of self-sacrificing love. how does one truly love like that? impossible without Christ. i need to pray about this, because i need God.

“this is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” 1 john 4:9-11

many guys i know that have rejected the gospel or have put it off, did it for the sake of “freedom.” they didn’t want to be bound by religion or rules, or even a commitment to God. it would mean they couldn’t do the fun things in life, they couldn’t be free. what i am realizing is that i often fall prey to this un-truth as well. i claim ignorance and even desire “not to know my sin” if it means that i have to give up an idol or sin in my life that i want to hold on to. i am realizing how backwards this thinking is. God shows us time and time again in His word that unless we trust in Christ we are slaves to sin. There is no freedom. Greed, selfishness, lust, and more are rulers in our life without Christ. as my Father, I need to remind myself that God loves me (even more than i love Noa!), and that righteousness is much better than sin. i need to also remind myself that sin makes me think i am satisfied momentarily, but leaves me empty and further from God. finally, i need to remind myself that i cannot change on my own, that my heart will not change without Christ. i need Him.

“we know that our old self was crucified with hiim in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin” romans 6:6

praise be to God!

Okay. Here’s the deal, this is our first pregnancy and our child is ‘late.’ I have no complaints or problems with our baby, in fact I don’t even believe that he or she is ‘late.’ Here’s why.

All pregnant women are given a due date. But it isn’t a deadline or a common date for our child to be born. A due date is the middle day in a 4 week window when our child is expected. To take away disappointment and frustration, I nominate that we redue the ‘due date.’ I propose that all due dates should be the last day of the 42nd week, which is when a mom is strongly encouraged/required to be induced if the baby isn’t born yet. Therefore no one will ever go past their due date (unless by choice) and most mothers will be esctatic when their child arrives early!
